Introduction

The National Chi Nan University (NCNU) is located in the geographic center of Taiwan: the town of Puli, Nantou County, neighboring the Sun Moon Lake—a world-class scenic spot. The beauty of its campus is a feast for the eyes. The Department of Southeast Asian Studies is the only institute in Taiwan under an integrated education system including all courses for Bachelor, Master and Doctoral Degrees, providing students with widened perspective and innovative thinking. In addition to the core academic subjects, the featured curricula in foreign languages of Southeast Asia enables students to take elective courses in languages such as Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Burmese and many others, thus further strengthening their competitiveness in the job market.

This department (graduate institute) has been engaged in research and teaching for more than 15 years. Our sizable academic database empowers students to develop market applications and participate in in-depth research. In terms of learning and application, our department, working together with relevant academic and industrial organizations, has actively developed a number of programs for cooperative applications, so that when students pursue future employment, they may choose from careers in cultural and creative industries, media communications, and public services, or make venture investment in local areas of Southeast Asia. Local migrant worker markets also urgently need young talents with creative minds and professional training related to the Southeast Asian region, and the opportunities in this field are endless.

Through research and teaching, the department expects to lead students to discover themselves and their diverse dreams and talents in the humanities, social support, and natural and social sciences.
